Who are the Catenians?
Simply put, The Catenians are an international association of Catholic men, who meet socially at least once each month at local branches or ‘Circles’.
In addition to bringing together our families through the social events listed elsewhere, we aim to strengthen our faith and family life through prayer and friendship.
Prayer
Our Circle meetings begin with prayers for one another, for those who have died or are sick within our families, our Circle and throughout the association. We pray for our brothers and their families in Zimbabwe who are going through difficult times and for vocations to the priesthood and religious life. Each Circle ensures that an annual mass is celebrated for vocations to the priesthood, deaconate and religious life, thus ensuring that at least one Mass is said every day of the year for this important intention. We also attend an annual special Mass for our deceased brothers and Circle Presidents usually commence their President’s Sunday with Mass.
Charity
The Circle President may choose to support a charity during their year in office. Catenians raise around £¾ million for worthy causes each year. In 2008/09, the centenary year of the association, our Association president launched an appeal in partnership with CAFOD, intended to raise £¼ million for Water Aid. If you wish to download an A4 appeal poster, just click here.
Furthermore we support the association’s two charities: the Benevolent Fund which
helps our brothers and their families who are in difficulty or need and the Bursary
Fund which provides financial support in the form of grants to young Catholics, aged
16-
Circle Visits
We extend our circle of friends by regularly visiting members in other Circles and by attending joint social events and celebrating Mass together.
Speaking Out
The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) of the Catenians exists to monitor activity, especially proposed legislation and current practices, which can or could contradict the teachings of the Catholic Church and have a negative impact on the beliefs and practices of both the Catholic Church and the wider Christian community. Through articles in our monthly journal, Catena, brothers are provided with guidance on current issues. For further information please click here
Other Activities
Individually, members tend to be very active in their local parishes, schools, governing bodies and a host of other organisations such as the SVP, Credit Unions, Parish Advisory Councils and so forth.
